Review: Wizkid’s ‘Smile’ Follows Closely In The Same Sonic Direction As The Soundman EP

Wizkid

The last time we got an album from Wizkid was back in 2014 when he dropped Ayo, his well-executed sophomore album that had hits like Jaiye Jaiye, In My Bed, Ojuelegba, Show You The Money and a few others. With a stellar debut album, the Ayo album was a piece that was needed to solidify Wizkid’s place as an A-list act and it did just that. Ever since then, Wizkid relaxed a bit and why wouldn’t he? He became a king and the poster boy for the then growing Afrobeats movement. With a slew of impactful singles, he kept the game in his hand and transcended into an international superstar. But people kept asking the most annoying question you can ask any musician “When will you release a new album?”

The pressure isn’t always great for creativity but fans will always be fans and they are ever ready to consume, so, therefore, they will always demand. Especially when you’re on that A-list level. Wizkid responded to his fans by announcing that he was working on a new album called Made In Lagos and teased that it may be his best work yet. Years went by and the album did not appear. Last year, he returned with Soundman Vol.1, a sweet and smooth EP released under his label Starboy. The EP served as the precursor to Made In Lagos and now with the release of Smile, the first single off Made In Lagos, we can tell that the album may offer us the same vibes as the Soundman project.

Wizkid Smile

Wizkid – Smile ft. H.E.R

In his early days, Wizkid served up fiery uptempo Afro-pop songs on a regular. These days, he’s taking it slow. Singers like himself and Runtown have slowed down the tempo and given us a more relaxed sound which is commonly referred to as the “vibe” sound. It’s more sensual and tactful, unlike the regular Afro-pop tunes that can be patched here and there with Lamba. Smile offers us a pleasing sonic connection between Wizkid and Grammy award winner H.E.R. They both take us on a sensual romance-filled ride with the aim of bringing us the sonic equivalent of orgasm and they succeed at it. Smile is a remarkable love tune that will grow with us through the years. A timeless love song delivered brilliantly by both parties. A song like this could have easily fit into the Soundman EP. Maybe that’s the same direction that Made In Lagos might be headed in. We will know for sure when we get the album, until then, we can smile with the knowledge that Wizkid’s long-awaited Made In Lagos album is just around the corner.
