At about 10pm on Sunday night, some unknown gunmen reportedly kidnapped a monarch in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa state living residents in the area in a state of pandemonium.
The monarch who is the King of Gurku community in Karu LGA, HRH Jibril Mamman Waziri was abducted alongside his wife, Hajiya Sa’adatu Waziri in their palace.
Their abductors snuck into the palace which is surrounded by mountains at about bed time when it was difficult for anyone to suspect their activities.
Leaving the palace unguarded, the unknown gunmen took the First-Class Royal father and his wife to an unknown destination.
As at the time of making this report, no contact had been established with the alleged abductors.
Meanwhile, a resident of the community, who spoke with newsmen said that the incident happened at about 10 pm when many other residents had gone to bed in their respective houses.
According to him, the abductors came in huge numbers and kidnapped the monarch and his wife while lamenting the absence of any security operatives in the area.
The resident while speaking to newsmen prayed that security agencies take appropriate measures toward rescuing the kidnapped king and his wife.
He said, “It was around 10 pm when the sad incident occurred. The gunmen who came in their numbers, abducted the Chief and his wife. They did not get any help from the security agencies that was why the gunmen were able to take them away.
“We are calling on the Police and other security agencies to urgently intervene in the matter so that they can be released as soon as possible.”
Confirming the incident on Monday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ramhan Nansel, while speaking to newsmen, said efforts were ongoing to rescue the chief and his wife unhurt.
He narrated the efforts already being made by the Police upon receipt of the report.
The Police PRO said, “I wish to confirm that around 10pm of August 6 2023, a distress call was received by the Nasarawa State Police command that the palace of the Chief of Gurku town located 10 kilometers away from Mararaba main town in a mountainous area, was invaded by men suspected to be kidnappers.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, Maiyaki Baba, deployed a combined team of police operatives in collaboration with vigilante groups to the scene.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the Chief and his wife were abducted to an unknown destination. The surrounding bushes and the mountains were combed but all efforts to get them proved abortive.
“The Commissioner of police has further deployed additional men of the tactical teams; the anti-kidnapping unit, and officers from the Karu area command to the scene in order to rescue the Chief and his wife unhurt.”
Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, North central Nigeria is located in close proximity to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with an area of 2,640 km2.
It has its headquarters in New Karu town and has grown in population beyond its original planned capacity. According to the 2006 census, the population of mainly New Karu town was 205,477.
