Popular US-based Nigerian author and social media influencer, Reno Omokri has urged Nigerians to patronize Nigerian made products stating that this would help increase the value of the naira against foreign currencies.

Omokri made the call via a post on his official handle on the social media platform, X formally known as Twitter.

He faulted Nigerians for the valuelesness of the naira in the global market, stating that the naira was depreciating in value due to Nigeria’s lack of export commodities and the refusal of Nigerians to patronize home made products.

Omokri, a former Special Assistant to Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said the naira will remain low in value for as long as Nigerians fail to improve their balance of trade by exporting made in Nigeria goods Overseas.

He disclosed that he was already making efforts as a patriotic citizen to help improve the value of the naira as he stated that it was to that regard that he made a visit to Nigeria and ordered some goods to be taken to the United Kingdom, UK where he is based.

His post read;

“Unless we improve our balance of trade position by exporting made in Nigeria goods overseas, the Naira will remain low in value. That is one reason why I flew to Nigeria, ordered this aṣọ òkè agbada, got a roamed Glo SIM card, put in an order for an Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing car for my company, and a bought a box full of made-in-Nigeria kilishi to give out to friends and family. I also instructed that cement from Dangote and Ibeto should be used on a 50-50 ratio in the student hostels I am building in Nigeria. I flew British Airways, only because there was no Air Peace flight between London Heathrow and Abuja.

“Currently, $10 billion is repatriated out of Nigeria annually by providers of foreign goods and services, like MTN, DSTV, Shoprite, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Toyota, to mention a few. It is okay when companies like Siemens do it because we need them and we do not have a made-in-Nigeria alternative. But it is economic sabotage against Nigeria to use a foreign made good or service when you have a Nigerian option.”

Omokri further urged Nigerians to be sacrificial like nationals of other countries who sacrificed their tastes to patronize home made products in a bid to give them a lift.

Omokri said this while comparing Nigerian brands with other international brands.

He said, “The foreign product may be better, but the more you patronise the Nigerian product, the better they will get. It is a sacrifice. We must realise that the reason a company like MTN has the level of service it does is because South Africans sacrificed and patronised MTN when they were not as good as Vodacom, which was also operating in South Africa. We must do the same for Glo and if you can’t help me promote made-in-Nigeria, please at least don’t bring your negativity here and bad mouth Glo, Dangote, Innoson and other Nigerian products. Patronise Nigeria and your patriotism will increase the value of the Naira and your purchasing power. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
