The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi has announced the arrest of a notorious cultist terrorizing the state.
The Police Commissioner, while speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, said the cultists’ arrest followed series of operations metted on the cultists’ hideouts by police operatives.
Identified as General 2man, the cultist who is now in Police custody was the leader of the Green Landers cult group, a group that significantly terrorized and betrayed the peace of the community.
General 2man hails from Ogbogolo community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state, according to the police commissioner.
He surrendered his arms and ammunition to the Police following repeated raids on the hideouts of his gang by operatives.
According to the police commissioner, Emeka Nwoyi, security operatives are currently on a look out for other fleeing members of the gang.
He said, “Operatives of the command on Friday at about 0730hrs, following incessant raid on cultist camps, one General 2man ‘m’ of Ogbologbolo community Ahoada West, leader of the GreenLanders Cult Group, surrendered to the police operatives one AK-47 rifle with six live rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm calibre and two SMG rifles.
“Effort has been in place to launch more raids on the hoodlums for the possible recovery of more arms and ammunition in their possession.”
Nwoyi added that men of the command, following a discreet investigation, arrested a 39-year-old Isaac Okoma of Alebiri in Ekeremo LGA of Bayelsa State in connection with the murder of one Josephine Ibiju of Baptist Waterfront.
“Preliminary investigation has commenced and the case will soon be transferred to the SCID, Port Harcourt,” he stated.
Nownyi also said operatives, following credible information, busted a drug peddling syndicate Rumuokwuta in Obio/Akpor LGA, noting that upon sighting the police, they took to their heels, abandoning their drugs and weapons.
The CP stated, “The notorious criminals took to their heels and escaped through the canal, abandoning the following items: 14 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one LAR rifle magazine, 50 wraps of weed suspected to be Indian hemp, 42 sachets of hard drugs suspected to be loud, six sachets of Chelsea drink, 20 sachets of Eagle drink, 10 sachets of Tombo bitters, four packets of Chesterfield cigarettes and five assorted GSM handsets were recovered.
“Investigation is in progress and efforts have intensified to arrest fleeing suspects.”
Cultism is an age long menace in the Nigerian society with different fraternities in different parts of the country.
While the government continues to make efforts towards reducing the spate of cultist activities in the country, the unlawful association has caused a handful of people their lives, properties and even the lives of their loved ones as initiating attacks and reprisal attacks can all lead to the death of victims. In some cases, many are left with injuries arising from gun shots, matchete cuts, knife stabs and bottle fights.
In 2022, a documentary by the British Broadcasting Company, BBC, earmarked a popular confraternity in Nigeria, “Black Axe” and tagged it the “deadliest cult group in Nigeria.”
While the documentary received applause in some quarters, others thought that it was the right thing being done the wrong way.
A professor in the Iowa State University, Iowa, USA, (name withheld) during a conversation with one of Xclusiveloaded’s reporters had said, the BBC’s portrayal of the “Black Axe” as “the deadliest cult group in Nigeria” meant that members of the confraternity would hence recieve more impetus to continue to feel like god’s over men having received global recognition of might.
